The Truth Behind 3 of the Most Common Sexual Urban Legends

Urban legends have been around forever. Each generation has contributed their own while others have been passed on from one generation to the next. In most cases, urban legends are just that – legends. In other cases there’s a grain of truth to the stories which often lends a bit of credibility to the tale and ensures their place in history. But no matter how much truth may contribute to the birth of one of these legends, the fact remains that they are always eventually blown entirely out of proportion. Here we’ve gathered together 3 of the most popular sexual urban legends to determine their origin and uncover why they continue to fascinate us.

Donkey Punch

Donkey Punch

A Donkey Punch is the act of hitting a sexual partner in the back of the head during sex – right before you’re about to climax – in order to tighten her anal sphincter. In theory this is meant to result in a mind-bogglingly good orgasm for the man while little thought is given to his unfortunate partner.

The origin of the phrase ‘Donkey Punch’ is debatable at best. Some claim it’s because the act can make the partner buck like a donkey while others claim it traces back to farmers punching a donkey in the head before having sex with it in an attempt to prevent the animal from running off. Whatever the origin, the truth is that the Donkey Punch simply doesn’t work.

Several doctors and experts have stepped forward to point out that there is absolutely no known human reaction that would result in the tightening of the anus as a result to a blow to the back of the head. Nevertheless, the urban legend that swears it’s true has spawned a movie as well as a number of pornographic films.

Gel Bracelets

Soft plastic bracelets have been used for fashion and charity for a number of years. In the early 2000s an Urban Legend was spread that wearers were advertising their interest in certain sex activities based on the colours of the bracelets. According to legend, the colours and matching colours were:

  • Black – Sex
  • Blue – Blow job
  • Pink – Flash
  • Yellow – Hug
  • Purple – Kiss
  • Green – Hand job
  • Brown – Analingus
  • Glow in the dark – Sex Toys
  • Silver or Gray – Outdoor sex
  • Light Blue – Anal
  • Light pink – Hug & kiss
  • Light green – Oral sex
  • Gold – All of the above

The origin of this urban legend is unknown, though many people blame the overreaction of adults and local media to a handful of rumours. The widespread concern over the practice led some schools to ban the bracelets entirely and was even cited as a potential trigger for a rape that occurred in Brazil during the height of this craze.

Vagina Dentata

Stories of women with teeth in their vagina date back to ancient times with the theme appearing in folk tales from around the world. A 2007 movie, Teeth, is the most recent example of this age old story and its popularity gave rise to a concern that this can – and does – actually happen.

The truth is that technically it is possible for a woman to grow teeth in her vagina, though it’s exceedingly rare. The condition is the result of Dermoid cysts which can grow in folds of skin such as the vagina or ear. The cysts have the potential of growing into bone, hair or teeth which is where it’s thought this legend find its origin. In reality, the cysts are more common on the ovaries and, even then, it’s a condition which affects only a handful of women.

The enduring popularity of these urban legends prove that we’ve always been fascinated – and possibly a bit horrified – by sex. While many have a grain of truth, it’s amazing to see how quickly the idea morphs into something much larger once popular culture grabs a hold of it. No doubt we will soon see a whole new generation of urban legends along with widespread acceptance, fascination and panic over them.
